likes; American food, anthropology, astronomy, beekeeping, cats, the classics, curry, medical history, military history, open spaces, the Pacific, painting, puzzles, reading everything, seashells, silent movies
dislikes; American beer, bland food, the illogical, Los Angeles, the spotlight, too much sun, working out
fears; losing a family member, losing her mind, mediocrity
overall personality; She’s a woman with a kaleidoscope mind, each new angle wondrous. Her million varied interests and passions inspire real, sometimes childlike delight. Her curiosity turns a searing searchlight onto anything in its path. This intensity of intellect is matched by her genuine, even guileless character and candid manner. There’s no tough outer shell and no gooey vulnerable center for it to protect. What you see is what you get. Frank to a fault, she says precisely what she means and means everything she says. Her incredible intelligence often leaves her alienated from the people around her. Despite her alternately aloof, prickly, and passionate demeanor, though, she is also kindhearted and staunchly loyal to her friends and loved ones.
When it comes to modern pop culture, Ursula is more than foreign—she’s downright extraterrestrial and thoroughly out of the loop. For all anyone knows, she’s spotted a dozen celebrities around town and failed to recognize a single one. She likes pretty things and designer labels admired through shop windows as much as the next girl, but shopping, posing, and partying could never fill her days. Shallow, two-faced people could never hold her attention.
That she doesn’t look like anyone on a magazine cover or a red carpet doesn’t bother her. Her bold features may not fit someone else’s narrow definitions of beauty, but the sheer force of her intellect can make the leggy, swan-necked Dr. Shaw radiant.

history; The beloved eldest child of a London barrister and his sharp-witted textile manufacturer wife, Ursula grew up in the warm and well read cocoon of a close-knit, distinctly middleclass family. They followed the motions of the pragmatic Mrs. Shaw’s Jewish heritage. Ursula’s deeper faith is her own discovery. Her younger siblings were talented and intelligent; Ursula, her father once remarked, was another thing entirely. Eventually, though, their alarm that their small daughter was dissecting bunny rabbits and songbirds “to see how they worked inside” turned to delight. Back home, her father’s study still houses a small shrine to his eldest’s accomplishments: photos flashing Ursula’s big toothy smile under a succession of mortarboards, her careful oil portraits, and even her girlhood insect collection.
Her sister’s less conventional achievements are harder to frame. Their very different paths always seem to be pulling the sisters in opposite directions, not least because Artemisia’s thoroughly subjective artwork confuses the rational Ursula.
As a university student, Ursula pursued undergraduate study and then a medical degree at Scotland’s St. Andrews, where she managed never to notice Prince William or Kate. A six-month tour of Iraq with UK forces put a final bullet in the last of her ambitions for a comfortable practice and living, breathing, hurting patients. Rattled and disturbed by her wartime experiences, she altered course. Doctoral work in archaeology and ancient diseases at Cambridge followed. She was looking for better puzzles and fewer people. The dead, Ursula has since found, are near-perfect patients.
But Dr. Shaw doesn’t spend her whole life with her eye to a microscope’s lens or bent over an autopsy table, saw and scalpel in hand. There have always been romances—and even a mildly successful pair of crime novels serialized in an Irish magazine with a very small readership. No doubt they appreciate her protagonists’ savvy sleuthing and steamy love scenes; their heroine has an encyclopedic knowledge of forensic botany—and the Kama Sutra.
Off the printed page, though, the author is as discreet as her airtight pseudonym. She may even prove a real challenge for the city’s resident Gossip Girl.
The surface says the brilliant young scientist, accompanied by the mummified remains of an Egyptian noblewoman, has arrived here on loan from a British museum, to install the mummy in a new exhibit and to work with local researchers on the trail of her ancient, microscopic murderer. Personal ties and more recent crimes may complicate matters. Her artist sister has settled here, gypsy-like, for now, but both know LA is one haunt of a former flame with secrets even the tabloids haven’t sniffed out yet. And that suits Ursula just fine.
